Nursery Production Method Influences Growth of Hickories

Abstract Hickories (Carya Nutt.) include multiple stately, native trees that offer ornamental features and site adaptability. Immense interest exists in effectively producing these trees, however, due to their lag-phase shoot growth strong development of a taproot with minimal fibrous-root branching, exhibit resistance standard growing techniques are purportedly difficult transplant successfully. New commercial products such as modified nursery containers touted better alternatives traditional production techniques. If new effective, they provide opportunities for developing hickory crops production. We questioned whether field-grown production, above-ground containers, or bags could be used grow bare-root whips hickories northern pecan. When differences between treatments occurred, was generally greatest plants grown bags, followed by container-grown plants, lowest plants. Species were detected, indicating not all species Carya should treated identically the nursery. Additional factors unusual nutritional deficiencies stock encountered, suggesting some may unique requirements this study: bitternut [Carya cordiformis (Wangenh.) K. Koch]; pecan [C. illinoinensis kingnut laciniosa (F. Michx.) Loudon]; shagbark ovata (Mill.) Koch].
